Bangladesh: Muhammad Yunus returns to Dhaka to head interim government
[Thu, 08 Aug 2024 17:32:57 +0300]

DHAKA August 08. 2024 (Saba) - Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus arrived in Bangladesh on Thursday to lead a new interim government after weeks of violent student protests that forced Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to resign and flee to neighboring India.

According to Agence France-Presse, Yunus stressed upon his return to Dhaka from Paris, where he was receiving treatment, that his priority would be to restore "law and order."

"If you trust me, make sure that there is no attack on anyone anywhere in the country," he said.

Yunus's return comes after protesters nominated him to head the government tasked with holding elections to choose a new leader, and comes after violence that killed more than 400 people.

According to Army Chief General Waqaruzzaman, Yunus is scheduled to take the oath of office on Thursday during a ceremony "in the presence of about 100 people initially."
