Mikati asserts Lebanon’s right to defend sovereignty amid Zionist escalation

BEIRUT August 02. 2024 (Saba) – Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati on Friday emphasized Lebanon's right to defend its land, sovereignty, and dignity "by all available means" in response to the "systematic and dangerous Zionist escalation."

In a speech, Mikati highlighted the recent Zionist attacks on the people of the south, Bekaa, and the southern suburb of Beirut, which have resulted in "hundreds of martyrs and wounded citizens, soldiers, and resistance fighters, as well as displaced families who lost their homes and properties."

He affirmed Lebanon’s commitment to achieving permanent stability by reclaiming the occupied parts of its southern lands and ensuring the Zionist entity adheres to UN Security Council Resolution 1701 in its entirety.

The Prime Minister welcomed any initiative that "achieves our goal of restoring the remaining occupied lands" and emphasized the importance of bolstering the deployment of the Lebanese army in cooperation with international forces to prevent any violations of Lebanon's internationally recognized borders.

He also asserted that "investing in our water resources is an indisputable and non-negotiable right."

Mikati described the regional developments as "worrying," warning of increasing danger and its potential to spread from one region to another. He reiterated the urgent need to elect a president, urging representatives to assume their responsibilities, set aside differences, and engage in honest and equal dialogue to select a suitable leader to "restore life to the homeland."

The UN Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 1701 in 2006, demanding the Zionist entity cease all offensive operations and withdraw its forces from southern Lebanon.

However, the occupation forces continue their escalation against southern towns and villages, alongside their ongoing aggression against the Gaza Strip since October 7.
