MADRID July 24. 2024 (Saba) - Eight sailors lost their lives when a fishing vessel sank off the Falkland Islands in the South Atlantic Ocean. The ship carried 27 people, including eight Russians and ten Spaniards.
Spanish media reported that a Galician government delegation stated that maritime authorities in the Falkland Islands confirmed "14 survivors, eight dead, and five missing." The maritime authorities have not officially released a death toll following the sinking of the "Argus Georgia" due to a severe storm.
Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albarez confirmed that ten Spanish nationals, including some scientists, were on board. The Galicia region authorities reported that two Spanish citizens were among the deceased, and two others were missing.
According to "The Guardian," the crew included ten Spaniards, including the captain, along with members from Russia, Indonesia, Uruguay, and Peru. The Falkland Islands government, a contested territory between the UK and Argentina, announced ongoing rescue operations.
The Galician authorities stated that all survivors are in good health, with only minor injuries reported. The survivors are en route to Port Stanley, the archipelago's capital, to be admitted to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.
