WASHINGTON July 23. 2024 (Saba) - US Vice President Kamala Harris has surpassed the number of delegates required to secure the Democratic Party's nomination for the upcoming presidential election.
Sources within Harris' campaign confirmed that she has received 2,214 delegate votes, exceeding the simple majority needed for nomination on the first ballot, according to an unofficial tally by The Associated Press.
Harris's strong position comes after receiving broad support from prominent party figures following President Joe Biden's unexpected withdrawal from the race. At 59 years old, Harris chaired a celebratory event at the White House before heading to her campaign headquarters in Wilmington, Delaware, where she praised Biden's "unparalleled" legacy.
The Vice President's campaign has gained significant momentum, with increased endorsements from Democratic leaders and a record-breaking $81 million raised in just 24 hours after Biden's withdrawal. This fundraising effort involved 888,000 donors, with 60% contributing for the first time in 2024.
Notable endorsements include President Biden, who described Harris as the first Black and South Asian Vice President in U.S. history, and former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, who expressed confidence in Harris's ability to lead the party to victory in November. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and other prominent figures have also voiced their support.
Despite this overwhelming backing, Harris faces considerable challenges as the election approaches.
Her approval ratings have been weak, and polls indicate a competitive race between her and former President Donald Trump, who is 78 years old. With Biden’s departure, the race has shifted from a battle between two elderly candidates to a contest where Harris has the potential to become the first female President of the United States.
