66 missing as landslide sweeps away buses in Nepal

KATHMANDU July 12. 2024 (Saba) - Nepalese authorities have reported that 66 individuals are missing following a devastating landslide that caused two passenger buses to plunge into an overflowing river along a highway.

The incident occurred around 3 am on Friday, approximately 120 kilometers west of Kathmandu, when the buses were swept away by the landslide.

Emergency teams are currently engaged in efforts to locate the buses and rescue any passengers, although persistent rainfall is complicating their operations.

According to a government official, multiple landslides have also blocked the road leading to the accident site, further hindering rescue efforts. Additional emergency personnel and security forces have been deployed to the area to bolster the ongoing rescue operations.

Earlier in the week, Nepalese security authorities reported that ongoing monsoon rains since June 10 have led to devastating floods and landslides across the country, resulting in 70 fatalities and leaving 86 others injured.
