WASHINGTON June 28. 2024 (Saba) - US President Joe Biden and his predecessor, Donald Trump, on Thursday exchanged accusations in their first debate that could constitute a turning point in the 2024 presidential elections.
The mutual accusations included issues such as abortion, the way the economy was managed, and the wars in Ukraine and Gaza.
The two main candidates went to stand behind their podiums without shaking hands.
The debate took place in Atlanta, Georgia, a state likely to have an impact on the elections.
During the first half hour of the debate, Biden seemed hesitant at times and stumbled more than once, while Trump launched one attack after another, including a number of repeated misinformation, such as the claim that immigrants commit a wave of crimes and that Democrats support the killing of children.
Both Biden (81) and Trump (78) are under pressure to show that they are able to deal with various issues and avoid any lapses in the conversation, while they seek to find a starting point and advance in a race that opinion polls have shown for months to be quite close.
