UN: Gazans face catastrophic levels of hunger

AMMAN June 26. 2024 (Saba) - The threat of famine in the Gaza Strip has been renewed after the Israeli enemy army's military operation in the southern Gaza city of Rafah disrupted aid delivery, leaving more than half a million Palestinians on the brink of famine, a panel of UN experts said Tuesday.

Palestinians across the Gaza Strip face a potential risk of famine in the coming months, according to the latest analysis by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC).

"The risk of famine remains high as long as the conflict persists and humanitarian access remains restricted," the report said.

More than half of households in the Gaza Strip exchanged clothes for money to buy food, a third resorted to selling garbage from the streets, and more than 20 percent of people surveyed spent "full days and nights without eating."

"The situation deteriorated again after the main crossing for the delivery of aid during this conflict was closed during the Zionist offensive that led to the complete disruption of the Rafah crossing."

"All Gazans have reached emergency levels of hunger with more than 500,000 people on the brink of famine," the experts' report stressed.
