SEOUL June 03. 2024 (Saba) - The South Korean National Security Council has made the decision to indefinitely suspend the 2018 inter-Korean military agreement until trust is reestablished between Seoul and Pyongyang.
During a working session on Monday, the Security Council resolved to include a proposal for the complete suspension of the military pact between the two Koreas, signed on September 19, 2018, on the agenda of the upcoming government meeting scheduled for Tuesday. This decision was reported by the Korean news agency "Yonhap," citing sources from the South Korean Presidential administration.
The 2018 inter-Korean military agreement had previously prohibited field exercises at the regiment level or larger near the border. However, both Seoul and Pyongyang have resumed exercises in disputed areas of the Yellow Sea since the collapse of the agreement in 2023.
Yesterday, North Korea launched approximately 600 additional balloons across the border, containing various forms of waste ranging from cigarette butts to plastic materials.
Pyongyang justified its balloon launch earlier in the week, labeling the balloons as "sincere gifts" intended as retaliation for the propaganda-laden balloons sent to North Korea, which criticized its leader, Kim Jong Un.
Tensions between the two Koreas escalated this year following Boeing's announcement of plans to deploy additional spy satellites to monitor perceived military threats from South Korea and the United States.
