NEW YORK May 02. 2024 (Saba) - Russia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya has considered the United States' use of the veto, which obstructed the acceptance of Palestine's membership in the international organization, has made the UN Security Council a hostage to the United States' policies in the Middle East.
TASS quoted Nebenzya as saying in a meeting of the United Nations General Assembly dedicated to discussing the American veto "We deeply regret such actions by the American side, as they do not reflect at all the principled stance taken by other members of the Security Council, who have actually become hostages to the United States' policy in the Middle East during these past six months."
Last month, the United States exercised its veto power in the Security Council, thereby obstructing the Algerian resolution project regarding accepting Palestine as a full member of the United Nations.
Nebenzya pointed out that the situation in Palestine cannot and should not have a military solution, adding "One of our firm convictions is that Palestine's full membership in the United Nations would facilitate the initial negotiating positions of both parties."
He said "The least we can and must do according to all moral imperatives, here and now, is to meet Palestine's request to join the ranks of United Nations members."
Meanwhile, the Russian delegate called for an independent international investigation into the recent discovery of mass graves in Gaza and for holding the perpetrators accountable.
Earlier, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for immediate permission for international investigators to visit the sites of mass graves committed by Israeli occupation forces during their ongoing aggression on Gaza, noting that the aggression has devastated the healthcare system in Gaza strip.
