Ramadan in Gaza: Depressing atmosphere, tragic circumstances

SANA'A March 13. 2024 (Saba) - With the advent of the holy month of Ramadan under tragic circumstances, with the continuation of the barbaric aggression against the Gaza Strip, the evaporation of hopes for a truce, and amid the specter of famine that threatens the residents of the Strip.

The sadness, misery, and gloom descend upon the Palestinians, especially in the city of Rafah, where more than 1.5 million displaced people are crowded, to find they themselves are prey to hunger and thirst even in the month of goodness.

The month of Ramadan this year comes as the Zionist enemy authorities continue to prevent and obstruct the arrival of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, especially to the northern regions, while the aid arriving to the south of the Strip does not satisfy the needs of citizens, especially in Rafah.

On the first night of the blessed month of Ramadan, about 500 worshipers were able to perform Tarawih prayers in Al-Awda Mosque, which is the largest in Rafah, while about 100 others prayed near the destroyed Al-Huda Mosque in Al-Shaboura, but water and dates were not distributed to them as usual, and lighting was not performed, Ramadan lantern due to the power outage, and worshipers relied on their phones in the midst of darkness.

Residents of the city of Rafah also held Tarawih prayers in the destroyed Al-Farouq Mosque on the first night of Ramadan, where they spread out on the ground to perform the prayer, and did not leave the mosques despite the darkness.

In Jabalia camp, after the destruction of the mosques at the hands of the Zionist enemy, the people organized Tarawih prayers in the streets, on the first day of the blessed month of Ramadan, as an expression of the steadfastness of the people and their adherence to their land and religion.

According to the United Nations and residents’ testimonies, the specter of famine hangs over the Gaza Strip, which is besieged by the brutal Zionist enemy, and most of whose residents suffer from a shortage of water, food, medicine, and fuel.

According to the United Nations and residents’ testimonies, the specter of famine hangs over the Gaza Strip, which is besieged by the brutal Zionist enemy, and most of whose residents suffer from a shortage of water, food, medicine, and fuel.

With the phrase (Despite the war and hunger... Ramadan Kareem from Gaza to the world), Palestinian journalist Muhammad Hajjar published a picture of a mural in Gaza to celebrate the welcome of the month of Ramadan, which comes this year to the Palestinians under very harsh circumstances with the continued Zionist aggression against Gaza.

Despite the suffering that the people of Gaza are experiencing, they welcomed the holy month of Ramadan with joy, and pioneers of social media platforms, websites and pages circulated videos about Gaza that carried the slogans (They will not steal Ramadan from us).

Despite all the pain, the people of Gaza were keen to show joy with the advent of the Holy Month, glorify the rituals of Allah, and demonstrate their love and attachment to the holy month.

In the camps for the displaced, Zina Ramadan came to light the tents amid the joy of the children and families on the occasion of the holy month, this shown in the video published by the Palestinian journalist Magdi Fathi on his Instagram page.

Activists on social media platforms interacted with the videos that came from the Gaza Strip on the first nights of the holy month, despite all the war and hunger they experiencing, and described the Palestinian people as “the great people.”

The Zionist enemy continues to commit crimes against civilians, as Palestinian journalist Hani Abu Rizq published a video of a bombing operation carried out by the enemy army on civilians in Rafah, and commented on the clip, saying: “While the Islamic world killed.”

While all efforts to achieve a ceasefire by the 156th day of the war, corresponding to the eve of the start of Ramadan, which began Monday, failed in most Islamic countries the death toll in the Gaza Strip as a result of the Zionist military operations rose to more than 31 thousand, the majority of whom women and children, according to the latest toll of the Ministry of Health in Gaza.

During the month of fasting, attention turns to the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied Jerusalem, which usually witnesses clashes during periods of tension and wars ,enemy forces imposed strict security measures in the Old City.

As for the West Bank, risks remain high as the cities of Jenin, Tulkarm, and Nablus prepare for more of clashes.

In contrast to previous years, the Old City did not see the usual decorations, where about 400 Palestinians have been martyred in clashes with security forces or Zionist settlers since the beginning of the war in Gaza.

Last month, the head of the political bureau of the Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, called on the Palestinians to travel to the mosque at the beginning of the month of Ramadan.

On Sunday, Haniyeh held the Zionist enemy responsible for the faltering ceasefire talks and rejected the movement’s demand to end the war on Gaza, but he said: Hamas still seeking a negotiated solution.

Haniyeh explained in a speech broadcast on television on the eve of Ramadan: “We do not want to give an agreement that does not end the war or bring back our brothers.”

It appears that hopes for a ceasefire, which ensured the peaceful passage of the month of Ramadan and allowed the return of some of the 134 Zionist hostages held in Gaza, have been dashed as the talks in Cairo faltered.

The Director-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, wrote in a post on the X platform: There must be a “ceasefire (in Ramadan).

It is worth noting the residents of the Gaza Strip, which subjected to continuous Zionist aggression on land, sea and air, live in extremely difficult humanitarian conditions, amounting to famine.
