NEW York November 29. 2023 (Saba) - On Wednesday, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, presented his report on a set of proposals for implementing Resolution “2712” calling for “humanitarian truces” in Gaza, to the UN Security Council.
In his speech before the Security Council, Guterres described the implementation of the truce so far as “limited and insufficient,” saying: “We must not turn a blind eye.”
Guterres also explained that there are "intensive negotiations underway to prolong the truce in Gaza," stressing that they are "strongly welcomed by the United Nations, but we need a real ceasefire for humanitarian reasons."
In this context, he pointed out that the people of Gaza "are currently facing an epic catastrophe and serious violations, as 80 percent of the population has been displaced from their homes and is being pushed towards the south, while half of the homes have been destroyed or are no longer safe."
Guterres continued: The United Nations is “working with several countries, including Qatar, the United States, and Egypt, to deliver aid,” but “only limited quantities have reached northern Gaza, although residents remain in the region.”
He also pointed out that "Gaza's hospitals lack everything, and the health system has collapsed in the Gaza Strip."
Likewise, the Secretary-General of the United Nations spoke of the bombing of 182 UNRWA centers, such that “108 of the organization’s employees were killed, while the number of United Nations deaths in Gaza reached 111, which is the largest number of the organization’s deaths in a war so far.” Calling for “respect for laws, UN and civilian employees, their property and facilities.”
