NEW DELHI June 02. 2023 (Saba) - 50 people were killed, while 300 others were injured, after a passenger train derailed and collided with a merchandise train in Balasore district of the Indian state of Odisha.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Twitter Friday that rescue operations were continuing at the scene.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Railways, Amitabh Sharma, stated that some of the pieces crashed from the off-the-rails train fell on a nearby track and were hit by another passenger train coming from the opposite direction.
The Coromandel train of Express was travelling from Howrah in West Bengal to Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu south, Reuters news agency said.
