Rome - Saba:
The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) announced on Friday that global prices of basic food commodities rose in July to their highest level in over two years, driven by increases in meat and vegetable oil prices.
In a statement, the organization reported that the rise in meat and vegetable oil prices in July outweighed the decline seen in the prices of cereals, dairy products, and sugar.
It noted that the average FAO Food Price Index, which tracks monthly changes in the prices of a basket of globally traded basic food commodities, reached 130.1 points in July 2025, marking a 1.6 percent increase compared to June of this year.
The statement added that this reading is the highest for the index since February 2023, though it remains 18.8 percent below the peak reached in March 2022, following the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian war.
