New York – SABA:
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported on Sunday that 96% of households in the Gaza Strip are experiencing water insecurity.
In its latest report, OCHA warned of the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza, stating that famine looms as the water and sanitation sectors near total collapse, according to the Palestinian news agency WAFA.
The report reveals that 96% of Gaza’s population cannot access safe and usable water sources, effectively stripping them of a basic human need.
OCHA also found that 90% of residents are unable to obtain drinking water, due to widespread destruction of infrastructure and depletion of essential supplies—raising the risk of disease outbreaks and malnutrition.
Additionally, 75% of Gaza’s population is facing major difficulties accessing toilets, further compounding an already dire humanitarian crisis.
These warnings come as Israel’s siege and military assault on Gaza continues unabated, and amid growing international appeals for urgent humanitarian intervention to secure basic necessities for civilians.
Since October 7, 2023, the Israeli military—backed by the U.S. and European powers—has carried out what has been widely described as a campaign of genocidal violence. So far, it has killed at least 60,839 Palestinian civilians, the majority of them women and children, and injured more than 149,588, in figures that remain incomplete as thousands are still trapped under rubble and on inaccessible streets
