Al-Hodeidah – SABA:
The Zabid Multipurpose Agricultural Cooperative Association has launched a series of community-led initiatives to rehabilitate irrigation infrastructure in Wadi Rama’, located in the Zabid district of Al-Hodeidah Governorate.
The initiative includes the opening and restoration of 14 main and secondary irrigation canals, with strong participation from the local community and support from the Provincial Agricultural and Fisheries Projects and Initiatives Financing Unit.
The goal is to revive the agricultural infrastructure in Wadi Rama’, which has suffered years of neglect, as part of broader efforts to enhance food security and expand arable land in the district.
Mutahhar Al-Hadi, Deputy Governor for the Southern Districts, hailed the initiative as a practical model of cooperation between local authorities and communities to serve the agricultural sector. He praised the Cooperative Association’s role in launching vital projects that have brought Wadi Rama’ back to life after a long period of stagnation.
Al-Hadi emphasized that the local authorities are committed to supporting such impactful initiatives that improve livelihoods and strengthen food security. He confirmed continued oversight and assistance to expand these efforts and ensure sustainable agricultural development in the southern regions of the governorate.
Mohammed Obaid, head of the Cooperative Association, said the irrigation canal restoration marks a strong return for agriculture in the valley, which had been inactive for several years. He noted Wadi Rima’s fertile soil and diverse crops, including grains, legumes, vegetables, fruits, and aromatic and medicinal plants such as sidr, henna, and horor.
He added that the Association, in coordination with relevant authorities, is working to further develop the region’s agricultural infrastructure. He also commended the Projects and Initiatives Financing Unit for its crucial role in supporting the project’s success.
Obaid expressed gratitude for the overwhelming community support, noting that this initiative is part of a broader series of projects aimed at reviving traditional agriculture in Wadi Rima and enabling farmers to make optimal use of local water resources.
