Italian Jasmine Paolini and Chinese Zheng Qinwen, ranked fourth and seventh in the world respectively, have advanced to the third round of the French Open, the second Grand Slam of the season, on Wednesday.
Paolini, who recently clinched the WTA 1000 Rome title, overcame Australian Ajla Tomljanović, ranked 71st in the world, with a straight-sets victory of 6–3, 6–3. Paolini had previously defeated American Coco Gauff in the Rome final with a score of 6–4, 6–2.
In the next round, Paolini will face the winner of the match between Ukraine’s Yuliia Starodubtseva and Russia’s Anastasia Potapova.
On her part, China’s Zheng Qinwen, this year’s Paris Olympic gold medalist, defeated Colombia’s Emiliana Arango 6–2, 6–3. The 22-year-old Zheng, who holds five career titles, will next face 18-year-old Canadian Victoria Mboko, currently ranked 120th in the world. Mboko, a qualifier, reached the third round after defeating Germany’s Eva Lys 6–4, 6–4. Impressively, the young Canadian has yet to drop a set through three rounds of qualifiers and two main-draw matches.
