Tehran Summons British Charge d'Affaires to Protest Detention of Iranian Nationals

Tehran - Saba:

The Iranian Foreign Ministry reported on Monday that the British Charge d'Affaires in Tehran was summoned to the ministry on Sunday to protest the suspicious and unjustified detention of a number of Iranian nationals in the United Kingdom and the false accusations leveled against them, as well as false allegations against Iran.

According to the Iranian News Agency (IRNA), Shahram Ghazizadeh, head of the Third Department for Western Europe at the Iranian Foreign Ministry, during the summons, requested clarification from the British government regarding the reasons and legal basis for the detention of the Iranian nationals.

He conveyed the Iranian government's strong protest against this measure and the unjustified accusations against Iran. According to him, he emphasized Iran's principled and responsible approach to respecting domestic laws and regulations.

He considered the arrest and indictment of Iranian nationals without providing any evidence, as well as the deliberate refusal to inform the Iranian Embassy in a timely manner, and the denial of consular access and protection to these individuals, to be contrary to accepted norms and standards of international law and human rights.

He called on the British government to comply with the provisions of relevant international treaties, including the Convention on Consular Relations, in this regard.

He emphasized that responsibility for the inappropriate effects and consequences of such measures—which appear to be politically motivated to pressure Iran—rests with the British government.
