Damascus-Saba:
The Popular Conference for Palestinians Abroad expressed its deep concern over reports on the dire humanitarian conditions of Palestinian refugees in Syria.
The conference called on the international community to fulfill its obligations to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), which cares for these refugees.
Reports issued by UNRWA indicated that more than 90 percent of Palestinians in Syria live below the poverty line, and that 65 percent of them suffer from food insecurity in 2024. Only 3.5 percent of the emergency appeal launched by the agency in December 2024, estimated at $255.9 million, has been responded to, which will have catastrophic humanitarian repercussions.
The statement noted that the number of Palestinian refugees registered with the agency in Syria has reached By the end of 2024, there will be 650,000 refugees living in nine official camps (Daraa, Homs, Hama, Neirab, Qabr al-Sit, Jaramana, Khan al-Shih, Khan Danoun, and Sbeineh), in addition to three unofficial camps (Yarmouk, Ein al-Tal, and Jaramana), distributed across the governorates of Damascus, Rural Damascus, Daraa, Homs, Hama, Aleppo, and Latakia.
Due to the migration of thousands of Palestinian refugees outside Syria, UNRWA provides services to 438,000 refugees.
UNRWA provides education in Syria to more than 50,500 students in 104 schools, in addition to healthcare through 22 facilities and a mobile clinic. It also provides cash and food assistance to the most vulnerable groups, 124 facilities targeted for repair, and four facilities in need of rehabilitation.
The "UNRWA Dossier" at the Popular Conference for Palestinians Abroad called on the international community, particularly donor countries, to quickly respond to the agency's emergency appeal before the humanitarian crisis worsens.
