Head of the judiciary in Iran's Semnan Province Mohammad Sadegh Akbari announced on Thursday that a Swiss citizen committed suicide this morning in the Iranian Semnan Prison.
The Mizan News Agency, affiliated with the Iranian judiciary, reported that this Swiss citizen "was arrested on charges of espionage by the security services", noting that it "has documents and evidence proving this, as his file was under investigation".
According to the agency, the Swiss citizen was detained in a room with another prisoner in Semnan Prison, and on the morning of the incident he asked his cellmate to go to the prison store to bring him some food.
The judiciary added the prisoner "took advantage of the time he was alone in the room and committed suicide", and that "prison officials immediately intervened to try to save him, but the efforts failed".
The agency indicated that all evidence in the prisoner's place of detention was examined, stressing that "the suicide is proven according to the evidence".
So far, the Swiss embassy in Tehran or the Swiss government have not issued any official comment on the news.
