Port Vila - Saba:
A violent earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of the Vanuatu Islands in the South Pacific.
The US Geological Survey said in a statement today, Tuesday, that the earthquake was 30 kilometers west of Port Vila and at a depth of more than 57 kilometers.
The agency issued warnings of the possibility of high tidal waves (tsunami), while no reports of human or material losses as a result of the earthquake have been reported so far.
Vanuatu, an archipelago of volcanic origin, lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where tectonic plates meet and friction causes seismic activity.
