The European Climate Agency "Copernicus" has predicted that 2024 will be the hottest year ever, driven by the burning of fossil fuels.
The Earth's temperature reached more than 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) for the first time this year compared to the pre-industrial average, The agency said in a statement today, Thursday.
"I think it is this extreme nature of warming that is worrisome," Carlo Buontempo, the agency's director, said, the data clearly show that the planet would not have witnessed such a long series of record temperatures without the continued increase in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere that drive global warming, he added.
