Agriculture & Fisheries Ministry condemns Eritrean attacks on fishermen in Yemeni territorial waters
[Thu, 10 Oct 2024 21:07:26 +0300]

Sana'a - Saba :
The Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources Ministry condemned in the strongest terms the attack on Yemeni fishermen and their injuries by Eritrean naval boats in the Red Sea.

A statement issued by the ministry, received by the Yemeni News Agency (Saba), indicated that three Yemeni fishermen were targeted at dawn on Thursday by Eritrean navy boats, which led to their injury, while they were practicing fishing activity 94 nautical miles away in Yemeni territorial waters.

The Ministry considered this treacherous attack, which resulted in serious injuries to fishermen Waseem Khalouf, Abdullah Sayegh and Mohammed Zailai, as a blatant violation of Yemeni sovereignty and a repeated threat to the lives of fishermen who depend on fishing as a main source of income for their livelihood.

It pointed out that this attack comes in the context of a series of repeated attacks by the Eritrean navy on Yemeni fishermen in recent years, which resulted in casualties and serious material damage, noting their right to practice their profession freely and safely in Yemeni territorial waters.

The statement condemned these continuous attacks by the Eritrean navy against Yemeni fishermen, which included arrests, confiscation of boats, and preventing fishermen from exercising their legitimate right to fish within Yemeni territorial waters, stressing that these illegal practices are a blatant violation of all international values, norms and laws.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries called on the international community , regional and international organizations to urgently intervene to stop these criminal attacks and take a firm stance to protect Yemeni fishermen and ensure their safety.

The ministry also called on the Eritrean government to take responsibility for this aggression, conduct a transparent investigation and hold those involved accountable, emphasizing its role in coordination with the concerned authorities in following up this case seriously and taking all necessary measures to protect the rights of fishermen and ensure that such unfortunate incidents do not recur.
