UN reports half million Sudanese affected by floods, rains since June

NEW YORK September 06. 2024 (Saba) – The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has announced that approximately half a million Sudanese have been impacted by severe floods and rains since June.

In a statement released, OCHA detailed that around 491,100 individuals, or 88,600 families, have been affected across 63 areas in 15 states of Sudan.

The report highlighted that 143,200 people have been displaced, with 35,518 homes completely destroyed and about 44,993 partially damaged due to the ongoing floods and rains.

The Sudanese Ministry of Health reported last week that the death toll from these floods and rains has risen to 173 since June.

This natural disaster compounds the already severe humanitarian crisis resulting from ongoing conflict in Sudan, which began in April 2023.

According to UN reports, the conflict has displaced over 10.7 million people, with approximately 2.3 million seeking refuge outside Sudan. Children represent 50 percent of the displaced within the country.
