GENEVA September 05. 2024 (Saba) – The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on Thursday the successful completion of the first phase of its polio vaccination campaign in Gaza, with approximately 200,000 children in the central Gaza Strip receiving their initial dose.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus commended the dedication of doctors and health workers who facilitated the campaign despite challenging conditions.

He emphasized the need to maintain respect for the humanitarian truce and ceasefire to ensure the continuation of such critical health efforts.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) highlighted the significant progress of the vaccination campaign, underscoring the importance of a lasting ceasefire to mitigate human suffering.

UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini also praised the campaign’s success on social media, noting that more than 500 teams, comprising nearly 2,200 health professionals and social workers, administered vaccines at 143 sites across Gaza.
