MEXICO August 28. 2024 (Saba) - Mexican President Andres Manuel López Obrador on Tuesday declared frozen relations with the embassies of the United States of America and Canada in his country.
According to US media, the Mexican decision came in response to what was seen as interference by the two ambassadors in the country's internal affairs, after they expressed opinions on the law on judicial reforms that Obrador plans to pursue.
Mexican President Lopez Obrador explained at a press conference the decision to freeze relations with the embassies, but not with the two countries.
The Mexican president is pushing reforms on the election of judges, including Supreme Court justices, by popular vote, and a committee in the lower house of the Mexican Congress approved the proposal late Monday, paving the way for its approval when the newly elected Congress takes office in September.
