BERLIN August 14. 2024 (Saba) - German security sources have said a military base near Cologne airport was closed due to a suspected act of sabotage.

Der Spiegel newspaper quoted a spokesman for the regional command in Berlin as saying the base had been closed, but declined to give further details, saying: "We have reasons to take this action and take the matter seriously."

"Police, military police and military intelligence are looking into a suspected act of sabotage targeting German forces," a security source said, noting that "workers at the base, which houses 4,300 soldiers and 1,200 civilian employees, were told not to drink tap water as a precautionary measure after a person stormed the facility due to suspicion of contamination while the incident is being investigated."

One person stormed the military base adjacent to Cologne airport, which is home to a fleet of military aircraft used for the travel and travel of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and ministers.
