Washington - (Saba):
The Wall Street Journal said that the tariffs imposed by former US President Donald Trump were a "valuable gift" to Chinese President Xi Jinping, allowing Beijing to strengthen its international alliances amid waning world confidence in Washington's credibility.
The newspaper noted that these policies weakened the United States' position as a global economic leader, while China exploited the situation to present itself as a more reliable alternative. It considered that what it described as a "tariff shock" could threaten Trump's chances of winning a second term, especially with the growing criticism of his trade policy.
It added that the exchange of tariffs between Washington and Beijing reached record levels, reaching 145% on some goods, raising fears of a shortage in the US market, especially with the onset of the vital trading season.
