ISTANBUL August 09. 2024 (Saba) - UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Adequate Housing Balakrishnan Rajagopal on Friday said that he "firmly believes that Israel's day of accountability is coming inevitably."
This came in a press interview, on the sidelines of the "Reconsidering International Law After Gaza" conference organized by the Faculty of Law at Bogazici University in the Turkish city of Istanbul.
Rajagopal added: "I firmly believe that the day of accountability will come for "Israel", and I hope that there will be a change in behavior due to the findings of the report of the International Court of Justice investigation committee and the loss of "Israel's" legitimacy."
He pointed to "the increase in mobilization against extremist Zionism in "Israel" over the past fifteen years."
Rajagopal added: "I believe that we are now at a turning point, and although the day of accountability may not come immediately, it is clear that "Israel" and its policies will change."
He stressed the need to take many measures against "Israel", such as economic sanctions or a trade embargo.
The UN rapporteur asked: "Why is it not overthrown? It is contrary to all the ideals of the UN Charter, it kills UN staff wherever it wants, and it describes UNRWA as a terrorist organization."
The UN official pointed out out that "Israel" does not want to be part of the UN, Rajagopal said: "Let's overthrow its regime, let's not expel "Israel", let's overthrow it."
He added: "This cannot be done with the approval of the UN Security Council because of the US veto, but it can be done through the General Assembly."
Rajagopal noted that decisions such as economic sanctions or an arms embargo against "Israel" may be taken in the UN General Assembly.
He added: "The General Assembly has these powers.. The question here is: Why do the countries of the Global South, which constitute the majority of the UN General Assembly and condemn "Israel", not use the power they enjoy under the UN Charter?"
