DHAKA August 06. 2024 (Saba) - The Bangladesh army on Tuesday declared control over the country after widespread protests forced Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to resign and flee, turning the page on 15 years in power.
Millions of people took to streets over the past month to demand resignation of Hasina (76), who was in power since 2009.
Hundreds were killed as security forces sought to quell the protests, but the protests widened and Hasina was finally forced to leave Bangladesh by helicopter on Monday as the army stood against her.
Army chief General Waqr al-Zaman announced on Monday in a broadcast on state television the resignation of Sheikh Hasina as prime minister, stressing that the army would form a caretaker government.
Shortly after crowds stormed and looted Hasina's residence, Waqar said: "The country has suffered a lot, the economy has been damaged and a large number of people have been killed, it is time to stop the violence."
