HANOI August 03. 2024 (Saba) - The Vietnamese President Tu Lam was elected as head of the ruling party on Saturday, two weeks after the death of his predecessor Nguyen Phu Trong at the age of 80, the party said.
"Today, August 3, 2024, the party's central committee elected Tu Lam as secretary-general of the Vietnamese ruling party," the party said at a press conference.
It was not immediately clear whether Lam would continue as president of Vietnam or step down from the role.
In his first statement after being elected secretary-general of the party, Lam said his promotion was the result of "an urgent need to ensure stability for the party."
