OTTAWA July 22. 2024 (Saba) - Researchers have identified a small continent hidden beneath the icy waters of the North Atlantic Ocean, located in the Davis Strait between Baffin Island and southwest Greenland.
The Iraqi "Al-Ma'louma" Agency reports that this protocontinent—a submerged segment of continental crust—measures about 12 to 15 miles (19-24 km) in length. Formed approximately 61 million years ago during the rift between Greenland and Canada, this crust was shaped by tectonic plate movements that occurred between 33 and 61 million years ago.
A study conducted by scientists from the United Kingdom and Sweden reveals that the protocontinent formed due to extensive rifting and stretching of the sea floor, which contributed to the development of the Labrador Sea and Baffin Bay. The formation process, spanning millions of years, involved a shift in plate movement directions from northwest-southeast to east-west.
