SEOUL July 10, 2024 (Saba) - Two people were killed Wednesday in floods and landslides caused by heavy rains in central South Korea.

A person was killed after being trapped in an elevator in a residential building in South Chungcheong Province due to flooding, while another person died of a heart attack in a house that collapsed due to a landslide in Seochon, North Jeolla Province, Yonhap News Agency reported.

Heavy rains also hit Gunsan, North Jeolla Province, flooding 17 homes and 16 roads in the area.

A meteorological official said "this amount of rain occurs once every 200 years."

Earlier, heavy rains hit southern parts of Chungcheong Province and northern parts of North Gyeongsang Province, with warnings of more heavy rains in other parts of the central and capital regions and inland and mountainous areas of Gangwon Province.
