NEW DELHI July 05. 2024 (Saba) - The toll from the stampede during a religious event in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh has risen to 123 deaths and 23 injuries, India announced on Thursday.
Local media quoted the authorities as saying: "The stampede occurred during a religious gathering in one of the villages of the city of Hatras in the state of Uttar Pradesh, about two hundred kilometers southeast of the capital New Delhi, due to overcrowding and severe congestion," noting that "the death of some of the injured, bringing the death toll to 123, including women and children."
Deputy Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh said 23 injured people were still receiving treatment following the incident.
Videos on the 'X' platform showed scenes of dead bodies lying on the ground and others transporting numbers of victims in vehicles, trucks and buses amid the shock of the crowds.
Stampedes during rallies are common in India, where 27 people were killed in a stampede at a rally in the southern India state of Andhra Pradesh in 2015.
