SEOUL July 1, 2024 (Saba) - North Korea fired two ballistic missiles eastward on Monday, the South Korean military said, after Pyongyang warned of taking "offensive and overwhelming countermeasures" against a joint military exercise conducted by Seoul, America and Japan.
The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff said that a short-range ballistic missile was launched from the Gangwon area in South Hwanghae Province, at approximately 5:05 a.m. in the direction of the northeast of the country, and another unidentified ballistic missile was launched at approximately 5:15 a.m., according to the Korean Yonhap News Agency.
The Authority did not provide further details, such as the range to which the missiles reached.
"As we enhance our monitoring and vigilance against any additional launches, our military maintains a full readiness mode while sharing North Korean ballistic missile data with US and Japanese authorities," the Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a text message to reporters.
On Sunday, the North Korean Foreign Ministry denounced the three-day multi-disciplinary "Freedom Shield" exercises, saying that the country would take "offensive and overwhelming" countermeasures against what it described as an attempt to strengthen the military bloc.
