GENEVA June 27. 2024 (Saba) - UN Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Martin Griffiths warned in a meeting with UN journalists in Geneva on Wednesday of the expansion of the war with Lebanon.
Griffiths was quoted by Al-Mayadeen website in a statement as saying: "The situation is very dangerous, and the war will be catastrophic" if it expands, stressing that it "will not stop at the borders of Lebanon, but may include Syria and other countries, which has a significant impact on Gaza and the West Bank."
"I was hoping to visit Lebanon this week, my last week of assignment, because I think the situation in Lebanon is the core of the problem, and southern Lebanon in particular. Talking to my colleagues in Jerusalem and Beirut, about what could happen there, what was being planned, the conclusion is that the situation is undoubtedly catastrophic."
Griffiths said the situation on the border with Lebanon is the focus of dialogue at the Dead Sea Forum in Jordan, "particularly on the extent of the effects of expanding the war." He called for a serious political intention to "banish the specter of war."
