SANA'A June 09. 2024 (Saba) - The coordination workshop held on Sunday in Sana'a between date-producing associations in Hodeida and Jawf provinces marks a significant step towards enhancing the local date industry and reducing Yemen's dependency on imported dates.
Organized by key entities like the Agricultural Cooperative Union and the National Program for Improving and Developing Value Chains for Agricultural Crops, in collaboration with government bodies and developmental organizations, the workshop aimed to foster relationships between local producers, importers, and manufacturers.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation Dr. Radwan al-Rabaei, emphasized the workshop's importance within the context of the value chain program. Contract farming, which commenced earlier, is being refined to optimize its contribution towards managing Yemen's import bill. With approximately 41 tons of dates imported in 2023, there's a pressing need to bolster domestic production and reduce reliance on imports.
Al-Rabaei also highlighted the visionary approach of the late leader, Sayyid Hussein Badr al-Din al-Houthi, in advocating for self-sufficiency and economic empowerment. His guidance underscores the importance of activating economic initiatives with awareness and foresight, aligning with the broader goal of building a self-reliant nation.
"He emphasized the guidance provided by the revolutionary leader in addressing economic challenges and implementing solutions. 'Our ongoing vision prioritizes the development of the agricultural sector, aiming to achieve self-sufficiency in agricultural production, curtail the import expenditure on agricultural goods, and foster the localization of manufacturing industries, especially within the realm of local food production, extending towards export opportunities.'
Furthermore, he underscored that a pivotal objective of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation's strategy is to bolster food security and attain self-sufficiency."
