SANA'A June 08. 2024 (Saba) - In a move aimed at protecting consumers, the Yemeni Ministry of Electricity and Energy has referred the cases of 20 private generator owners to the Industry and Trade Prosecution Office.
These individuals are accused of violating the government-approved electricity tariff, adding unauthorized subscriptions, and failing to meet technical safety standards.
"The prosecution will take all necessary legal measures to ensure society is protected from the greed of certain private generator operators," declared Judge Abdulnasser al-Baidhani. "
This includes those who inflate prices, add illegal subscriptions, and disregard established technical regulations."
The Public Prosecution has vowed to swiftly handle these cases, prioritizing the interests of Yemeni citizens. They commended the Ministry of Electricity for identifying and referring violators for legal action.
According to the Deputy Prosecutor for Industry, several similar cases have already been successfully prosecuted. He praised the Public Prosecutor's commitment to holding violators accountable.
However, Saleh Jaber, Vice Chairman of the Main Committee for Private Generators, disputed the number of violators. He claims the Ministry only submitted files on 13 stations.
Jaber emphasized the Ministry's commitment to enforcing regulations and ensuring all private generator owners adhere to the approved tariff.
He warned against any unauthorized fees or charges.
This crackdown on price gouging and regulation violations comes amid ongoing power struggles in Yemen.
The move aims to ensure fair electricity access for citizens during a challenging economic period.
