Helicopter carrying Iranian president crashes in East Azerbaijan province
[19/May/2024]

TEHRAN May 19. 2024 (Saba) - According to Iranian media reports on Sunday, the helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi suffered an accident in the province of East Azerbaijan.

Tasnim International News Agency, citing reports, reported that the helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi suffered an accident in East Azerbaijan province.

It pointed out that some of the Iranian president's escorts in this helicopter were able to contact the center, so hopes are growing that this incident will end without loss of life.

This convoy consisted of three helicopters, with two helicopters carrying some ministers and officials safely arriving at their destination.

Information indicates that the Imam of the Friday of Tabriz, Sayyid Hashim, and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian were on board the helicopter carrying the Iranian President.

Red Crescent rescue teams, military and police auxiliary forces have begun a large-scale operation to find the helicopter.

Locals say the condition of the helicopter remains unknown due to the foggy atmosphere in the area.

On board the helicopter carrying Iranian President and East Azerbaijani Governor Malek Rahmati, Imam Juma Tabriz Sayyed Hashim and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian are on board.

Given the telephone call of one of the President's escorts to the centre after the incident, there are high hopes that this incident will end without loss of life.

Mr. Mehrabian and Mr. Bazarbash, Ministers of Energy and Roads, who were on board the other two helicopters, arrived safely at their destinations.

According to Tasnim, on Sunday, Mr. Raisi visited the province of East Azerbaijan and inaugurated with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev the "Qiz Qal'at Si" dam, a joint project between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan.

Iranian Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi said in an interview about the Iranian president's helicopter accident in East Azerbaijan province: Today we witnessed the opening of the Qizkala Si dam in the presence of the President of Azerbaijan, after which the president and his accompanying delegation were on the way back by several helicopters, and one of the helicopters had to make a difficult emergency landing due to bad weather conditions and the situation in the region.

Rescue teams have been sent to the area, but due to fog in the area, it may take some time to reach the helicopter.

"We have communicated with the president's escorts, but because the area is complicated, some communications are difficult and we are waiting for rescue teams to arrive at the scene of the accident and the helicopter to land and provide us with information.

The relief and rescue organization of the Iranian Red Crescent announced the dispatch of Red Crescent drones to the site of the president's helicopter accident.

Babak Mahmoudi, in a statement to Tasnim Agency, referred to the published news about an accident involving the helicopter carrying the Iranian president and his companions in the Kleber Warezgan area, and said: Red Crescent rescue drones were sent to the site of the accident.

"Due to unfavorable weather conditions, there is no new information available at the moment and searches are ongoing.

The spokesman for the Emergency Organization in Iran announced that it was not possible to continue the air operation due to the thick fog, and said: Eight emergency ambulances from Tabriz headed to the scene of the incident.

Babak Yektabrast said in a statement that based on the news regarding the president's helicopter accident in East Azerbaijan, an air emergency helicopter headed to the region but unfortunately, due to the dense fog, it was not possible to continue air operations.

Eight emergency ambulances from Tabriz went to the scene.

Due to the distance between the site of the possible accident and the road, three teams of the Tabriz emergency team are in the area with equipment to search and provide emergency medical services.

The scene of the accident of the helicopter carrying the president and his companions was in the vicinity of the village of "Ozi" located in the forests of Arsbaran and rescue teams were sent to the scene.

The area where the incident occurred is hard-to-reach, and the issue has posed difficulties for rescue teams.

Iranian government spokesman Ali Bahadri Jahromi said: A cabinet meeting was held today, today's issues were decided, and the latest reports on the latest incident were presented.

The executive deputy also went to Tabriz with some members of the government.

"Our 40 rapid response teams are researching the area," said the President of the Red Crescent Society. The weather conditions are very unsuitable and the area is rugged and difficult to navigate, and every effort is being made.

"We used drones and air procedures, and due to bad weather, aerial search is not possible. It is a rugged mountainous area.
