BEIJING May 2. 2024 (Saba) -The Chinese authorities announced on Thursday that part of a highway in Guangdong province had collapsed, causing vehicles to fall, killing 36 people and injuring 30 others, during a period that saw millions of people traveling in China for the Labor Day holiday.
The collapse was caused by heavy rain seen by Meizhu-Dabu Expressway, New China News Agency (Xinhua) said, noting that the collapsed section was 17.9 meters long and caused 23 vehicles to fall.
Meizhou is a district in southern China's Guangdong province that has witnessed heavy rain and cold weather since late April, leading to dangerous mudslides while water submerged homes and destroyed bridges.
