KABUL May 01. 2024 (Saba) -The terrorist organization ISIS today claimed responsibility for the recent shooting of worshippers at a mosque in western Afghanistan, killing six people.
The group said in a Telegram statement that one of its members had attacked a mosque in Herat province with automatic weapons.
The attack on Monday evening in the Gozara district left one person injured, in addition to the dead, and the attacker fled the scene.
Local media reported that the mosque's imam was among the dead.
Former Afghan President Hamid Karzai condemned the attack, saying "this terrorist act is contrary to all religious and humanitarian standards."
The UN mission in Afghanistan also condemned the attack, saying a child was among the victims. She called for urgent accountability for perpetrators and measures to protect citizens.
The Islamic State's branch in Afghanistan is a rival to the Taliban and often targets private schools, hospitals and mosques in the country.
