MOSCOW May 01. 2024 (Saba) - The Russian Defense Ministry announced that it shot down six long-range "Atackms" missiles, which the United States supplied to Ukraine in the recent period, while the governor of Crimea, which was retaken by Russia, said that munitions fell on his territory.
The Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement that Russian air defense "destroyed six Atacams missiles in the past 24 hours," without specifying where this happened.
Washington announced last week that it had sent the missiles to Ukraine, which it had long claimed, so that they could hit areas behind the front line.
But the governor of Crimea, Sergei Aksyonov, warned the residents of this region of the presence of scattered "unexploded ordnance" after the destruction of the "Atacams missiles".
Referring to the Simferopol region, one of the cities on the peninsula. Russia did not say whether the rockets or falling debris caused any damage, and Ukraine made no comment.
On Wednesday, a spokesman for the US Department of War told Sputnik that Biden secretly directed his national security team to provide Atacams missile systems to Ukraine, as part of a security assistance package announced in March, and those munitions arrived in April.
Ukraine used U.S. Atacams missiles for the first time in October against Russia, but those recently sent have a longer range, up to 300 kilometers.
