NEW YORK April 23. 2024 (Saba) - Hundreds of faculty members at Columbia University in New York have staged a mass strike to protest the university president's decision to arrest students at a pro-Palestinian protest last week.
According to the American media, the solidarity protest came as students re-erected protest tents on campus. They were demolished last week when the New York Police Department arrested more than 100 students, who were also suspended by the university.
Bassam Khawaja, an assistant lecturer at Columbia Law School, said, “He was shocked and appalled because the president immediately went to the New York Police Department.”
The Yale Daily News student newspaper reported that when Columbia University announced that it would hold classes remotely, students at universities across the United States launched their own protests at Yale University in Connecticut, police arrested more than 40 pro-demonstrators. The students called on their universities to support the ceasefire in Gaza and withdraw investments from companies that have relations with the Zionist entity.

Tensions rose at Columbia University after more than 100 protesters were arrested on Thursday, after New York police broke up a student-led protest. The students set up tents to form a makeshift encampment as part of a pro-Palestinian demonstration.
Dozens of students were also suspended, including Isra Hirsi, the daughter of Minnesota Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar.
Students, professors and politicians quickly condemned Shafiq's decision, describing the arrest and suspension of students as unjustified and a violation of freedom of expression on campus.
