[30/April/2024]

SANA'A April 30. 2024 (Saba) - Despite the interventions of university administrations and the severe repression and arrests practiced by the American police.

The movement of American university students in support of Palestine continues in many universities across the United States, and even expands to many European, Arab and Muslim countries.

According to recent media reports, the number of detainees across the United States has exceeded 900 in the past ten days, in the biggest reaction by US police to college activity in years.

On April 18, a strong uprising began in American universities against Washington's financing of genocide committed by the Zionist enemy in the Gaza Strip since the seventh of last October, and it affected famous universities such as: Columbia, Emori, Northwestern, George Washington, Georgetown, Yale, the University of Washington, Southern California, Harvard, and other ancient scientific edifices throughout the United States.

Renewed protests against the Zionist enemy entity outside the Fashion Institute of Technology, affiliated with New York University, in Manhattan, New York, days after dozens of demonstrators set up tents in the place and took control of the building. The White House insisted last night that weeks of pro-Palestinian protests at U.S. universities must remain peaceful, following police arrests of about 275 people at four separate universities over the weekend.

US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told ABC television: "We certainly respect the right to peaceful protest." "We fully condemn the anti-Semitic language we have heard recently and certainly condemn all hate speech and threats of violence there." According to him.

With final exams looming in the coming weeks, some U.S. universities have closed their doors and instructed students to complete their classes online.

Many of the activists behind the protests at American universities, not all of them students, are demanding a ceasefire in Gaza and also severing ties with the Zionist enemy entity.

It is noteworthy that the student movement inside American universities began at Columbia University in New York, when students rejecting the Zionist war on the Gaza Strip began a sit-in on the campus of Columbia University in New York.

They demanded that its administration stop its academic cooperation with Zionist universities and withdraw its investments in companies that support the occupation of the Palestinian territories.

As US police intervened and hundreds of students were arrested, the anger spread to dozens of universities across the United States, including leading universities such as Harvard, George Washington, New York and Yale, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and North Carolina.

Later, the unprecedented student movement in support of Palestine in the United States expanded to other universities in several European countries such as France, Britain, Germany, Australia and Canada. And other Arab and Islamic countries, all of which witnessed demonstrations in support of those in American universities and demands to stop the war on Gaza and boycott companies that supply weapons to the Zionist entity.

Palestinian, Arab and Islamic social media platforms are witnessing wide interaction with the student movement in American universities, which has spread to universities in Canada and Western and Arab countries, as the student revolution has spread from the east coast to the far west of the country.

Opponents of the Zionist genocidal war against the Gaza Strip are leading a sit-in on the campuses of American and European universities, despite the police crackdown on them at the request of university administrations and driven by a campaign of incitement led by members of Congress accusing the protesters of anti-Semitism.

Medals were also issued in Arabic and English on social media platforms, all of which witnessed supportive opinions and others explaining the importance of the student movement, which was described as "historic" due to its participants and their goals, which reached the point of demanding an end to the Zionist occupation on Palestinian land.

It seems that the current student movement brought to mind the scene of struggle that pervaded the United States during the sixties of the last century, where massive student protests erupted inside universities, and expressed their rejection of the war in Vietnam, and the apartheid regime in South Africa, and these protests had profound effects on American society and the political scene, and brought about transformations in the struggle for civil rights and social justice.

The US authorities are working to clamp down on the protesters, as the police arrested hundreds at different universities, and scenes showed part of the police repression of the protesters on the Emory University campus in Atlanta in the state of Georgia, and among those who were brutally arrested, economics professor Caroline Fohen.

Noel McAfee, head of philosophy at the same university, was arrested after participating in pro-Palestine protests. The unprecedented movement reached the prestigious George Washington University in the American capital, which was founded by the first president of the United States in 1821.

Statements from university security and police at Columbia and California universities revealed that the balance is tilted in favor of students in the negotiations.

Although Columbia University said it was looking at other options to restore calm on campus if discussions with students did not work, the university strongly denied that it had called police to disperse the students.

US police officers beat and reprimanded a professor at a prestigious university, threw her to the ground, tied her in front of the cameras and took her to detention, ignoring her screams as she showed them her academic degree and asserted her right to freedom of expression.

According to observers, this incident was not imagined seven months ago, it is unreasonable to beat a white American woman and an academic also by her government, which preaches freedoms, and issues annual reports on the extent to which countries around the world respect women's rights.

Observers, historians and philosophers believe that the "Al-Aqsa flood" swept away the barricades of humanistic and democratic illusion in the West and washed away the powders of freedom that have covered faces for decades. Writer Mazen al-Najjar says in an article on Al Jazeera Net that the uprising of American universities is a unique stage "in the context of the cultural confrontation of the system of imperialist domination over the world," where "broke some of its episodes, and inspired large audiences in the West new human, spiritual and moral horizons with pride or humiliation humiliated, even if haters hate."

Al-Najjar adds: What is happening in American universities "strongly poses the worst nightmares of the Zionists, which is the delegitimization of Israel and its moral vice, especially among the younger generations of the West, as the movements and demonstrations were led by a new generation of Jews in the West who grew up in established Zionist families, but they rebelled against the Zionist narrative in favor of the narrative of truth and justice."
