WASHINGTON April 17. 2024 (Saba) - The U.S. House of Representatives has begun impeachment proceedings against Interior Minister Alejandro Mayorkas by referring the articles of impeachment against him to the Senate to begin his trial as President Joe Biden's immigration policy official.
CNN reported today that the procedure limits senators the role of jury, while the prosecution will be represented by members of Congress delegated to the Senate.
If the House and the Senate approve the full vote of confidence, Mayorkas would become the first U.S. secretary in nearly 150 years to be removed from office in this way.
The Republican-led House of Representatives voted to impeach Mayorkas in its second attempt in February, blaming it for the record flow of illegal immigrants across the country's southern border.
