MORESBY March 25. 2024 (Saba) - Three people, including two children, were killed in an earthquake that struck Papua New Guinea on Sunday morning, New Zealand's RNZ news site reported on Monday.
The earthquake completely or partially destroyed more than 90 houses in the epicenter area.
The radio pointed out that the loss of life is not only related to the occurrence of the earthquake itself, but also to the fact that flooding occurred in the epicenter area over the previous several days.
The radio website quoted local media as saying that one of the dead children fell into floodwaters because of a piece of the wall of a house that collapsed above it as a result of the earthquake and drowned.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake had a magnitude of 6.9, and its epicenter was at a depth of just over 40 kilometers.
