Iran loses leader who has long carried concerns of his people, carried concerns of nation & region

SANA'A May 20. 2024 (Saba) - Today, Iran has lost a rebel from its revolutionaries and an intrepid leader who has long carried the concerns of his people and sought the progress of his country, its elevation, development and preservation of its people, as he carried the issues of the nation and the region and strived to consolidate the pillars of the revolution and immunize Iran from the plans of enemies.

On Monday morning, Iranian state television announced the death of Sayyid. Raisi, Abdollahian and their entourage in a helicopter crash, shortly after authorities announced that the helicopter carrying them had been found after a tragic "accident" in a mountainous northwestern region and that "no sign" of life had been detected in the wreckage.

Sayyid. Raisi died in a tragic incident along with his Foreign Minister, Dr. Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, who was once described as the soft face of Iran's hard power, and who led a difficult round of diplomatic conflict with the recent developments in Iran and the region, in addition to the Imam of the Friday of Tabriz, Sayyid Muhammad Ali Al-Hashem, the Governor of Tabriz, Dr. Malik Rahmati, and Sayyid Mahdi Al-Musawi.

The announcement of the death of the 63-year-old Iranian president and his companions came after a difficult search operation in which dozens of rescue teams participated amid thick fog and strong winds, as the harsh weather conditions made it difficult to determine the place where the accident occurred, and this made it difficult for rescue teams to reach the area.

The helicopter crashed in the rugged mountainous region of Julfa amid difficult weather conditions, as the president returned from a ceremony he attended Sunday morning with his Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliyev to inaugurate a joint dam on the Aras River bordering the two countries.

The funeral of the late President Ebrahim Raisi and his accompanying delegation, who were killed in a helicopter crash, will begin on Tuesday afternoon in the northwestern Iranian city of Tabriz in a mountainous area in the west of the country.

The official IRNA news agency reported that "the funeral ceremony of the president and his companions will be held on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. local time in Tabriz." Raisi's body will later be transferred to the capital Tehran.

With this tragic incident, officials from different countries of the world and the region offered their condolences for the martyrdom of the Iranian president, his foreign minister and their companions in the crash of the helicopter they were carrying them. They expressed their deep sadness at the death of the Iranian president, his foreign minister and other officials. Several countries also participated in various means in the search and rescue efforts related to the helicopter crash of the Iranian president and his companions.

Following the incident, the Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ali Khamenei, offered his condolences on the martyrdom of Mr. Raisi, Abdollahian and their accompanying delegation, declaring five days of public mourning in the country.

Mr. Khamenei said that Vice President Mohammad Mokhbareb will assume the duties of president in accordance with Article 131 of the law, where he and the heads of the judiciary and legislative branches must prepare for elections within 50 days.

Iran's Constitution stipulates that if the President dies in office, his first deputy assumes office, with confirmation from the Supreme Leader, who has the final say in all matters of the State, and a council composed of the First Vice-President, the Speaker of Parliament and the Head of the Judiciary arranges the election of a new President within a maximum period of 50 days.

Iranian government spokesman Ali Bahadri Jahromi announced that Assistant Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani has been appointed acting Iranian Foreign Ministry.

The Chief of the General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, Major General Bagheri, assigned a high-level delegation to open an investigation into the dimensions and causes of the helicopter crash of the President of the Republic, who arrived at the scene in East Azerbaijan and began investigating the incident, and the results of field investigations will be announced later.

For his part, IRGC Commander-in-Chief Maj. Gen. Hossein Salami said the inspiring, heroic and constructive roles played by the martyr Sayyed Raisi in performing serious and sensitive responsibilities in the Islamic Republic regime, especially during the presidency, should continue and be immortalized as a school and a good example of service.

In turn, former Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said that America is the reason for the martyrdom of the President of the Republic and his comrades because of the ban on the sale of aircraft to his country.

It is noteworthy that many heads of state and leaders have been exposed to air accidents that sometimes led to their deaths, the latest of which was the "emergency landing" of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi's helicopter. Perhaps the most prominent of these are: The plane of Palestinian President Yasser Arafat was subjected to an accident "emergency landing" in the Libyan desert in 1992, an accident in which the plane, belonging to the airline "Air Bissau", which Arafat was traveling in during an emergency landing in the Libyan desert on April 7, 1992. Arafat survived and three of his companions died.

Pakistani President Mohammad Zia-ul-Haq was killed when his plane exploded in an accident said to have been orchestrated on August 17, 1988, near Hawalpur on a trip accompanied by senior Pakistani military personnel. Lebanese Prime Minister Rashid Karami was also killed in the bombing of a military helicopter, and Samir Geagea, commander of the Lebanese Forces, was convicted of masterminding the assassination and sentenced to death and then life imprisonment before being released in 2005.

The Ecuadorian president was killed in a plane crash on May 24, 1981 in circumstances that have not been fully explained. Polish Air Force One crashed near Russia's Smolensk province on April 10, 2010, with Polish President Lech Kaczynski, his wife Maria Kaczynski, and other high-ranking Polish politicians on board.

Macedonian President Boris Trajkovski was also killed in a plane crash on February 26, 2004, where Air Force One crashed ten kilometers from the Bosnian city of Mostar, and with Trajkovski six people from his delegation and two crew members were killed.

A Tu-134 carrying Mozambican President Samora Machel back to Maputo from an international conference on October 19, 1986, crashed over the borders of South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe, and several Mozambican government ministers died with the president.

Iraqi President Abdul Salam Aref, 45, was killed when his helicopter crashed under mysterious circumstances as he and some of his ministers and companions were traveling between Qurna and Basra on the evening of April 13, 1966.
