GENEVA December 08. 2023 (Saba) - The Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Martin Griffiths, said yesterday a press conference in Geneva today that what is happening in Gaza “represents a threat to international security and stability,” and that a ceasefire there “must begin immediately.”
Griffiths added, according to Al-Mayadeen TV, "We no longer have what can be described as a humanitarian operation in Gaza."
He added: "The Palestinians are pushing to move towards the south, but they do not find safe areas. The pace of the military attack in the south is a repeat of what it was in the north and there is no safe place, and more than two million people in Gaza do not know what their future is."
Griffith confirmed that there are signs of optimism about the possibility of opening the Kerem Shalom crossing soon, to allow more humanitarian aid to enter the Gaza Strip.
He pointed out that "the bad situation in Gaza prompted the Secretary-General to request the activation of Article 99 of the United Nations Charter," pointing out that "there is no exit for civilians in Gaza, our humanitarian programs are stalled, and we are trying to find solutions that will help us bring in aid."
He also stressed that international humanitarian organizations have one clear message, which is that what “is happening in Gaza must stop immediately.”
It is noteworthy that the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, submitted to the President of the UN Security Council yesterday a letter in which he used, for the first time during his reign, Article 99 of the United Nations Charter, calling on the Council to establish a ceasefire in Gaza for humanitarian purposes.
