SANA'A October 03.2023 (Saba) - Activities and events promoting Yemeni coffee organized by the Coffee Unit of the Higher Fisheries Committee and the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation continued on Tuesday as part of the commemoration of the second anniversary of the Yemeni Coffee Revolution and World Coffee Day.

The week-long events aim to promote the revival of coffee symbolism, spread coffee culture and publicize the importance of the coffee tree and the need to expand the cultivation and production of this important crop.

The events include Yemeni coffee tasting programmes with its multiple varieties, reviving the history and culture of coffee and restoring its status, and highlighting Yemen's image as a home of quality and distinctive taste of coffee, which enjoys a wide turnout in markets locally and abroad.

During Coffee Week, a number of new products were launched in the field of coffee as part of efforts to develop local coffee products and create a consumer culture for Yemeni coffee.

An event was also held at a coffee company in the presence of the Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation of the Caretaker Government, Engineer Abdulmalek Al-Thor, to publicize the post-harvest transactions "increasing the quality and productivity of the coffee crop".

They included guiding concepts by selected researchers and coffee experts in the field of drying transactions, pre-peel coffee fruit sorting, peeling, sorting and grading by density, manual purification, packaging and storage.

The event, which was attended by the President of the Coffee Producers' Federation, Mohammed Othman, and the Director of the Coffee Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Engineer Mohammed Harith, received wide participation from the tasters, consumers and those interested in coffee.

The official of the Coffee Unit of the Higher Agricultural and Fisheries Committee Mohammed Al-Qasimi told Yemen News Agency (SABA) that through the National Coffee Auction and with the cooperation of cooperative societies, exporters, the private sector, the Ministry of Agriculture and stakeholders, the Unit seeks to promote the cultivation and productivity of coffee as an important economic crop.

Some achievements had been made in that regard, including the opening of auctions to promote coffee internally and externally and the adoption of certain legislation relating to it. Yemen's productivity from this crop rose during the year 1444 AH to 12 thousand tons after it was only 2800 tons. The number of exporters also rose to 125, as it is currently exported to more than 25 countries.

He drew attention to efforts to develop coffee productivity and promote coffee cultivation through the establishment of competitive global auctions, festivals and exhibitions, and the adoption of a matrix to support and develop it.

Yemeni coffee has a special place with consumers both inside and outside Yemen. There is unanimous consensus on its historical value and quality compared to its counterparts in the world. Yemen has registered a distinguished presence at the world level since the early sixth century in this aspect as the first source of coffee through the port of Mekha, which bears the name of Yemen to all parts of the world.

Coffee is classified as an important agricultural cash crop, with high returns and profits, as well as its contribution to supporting the national economy.
