TEHRAN July 24. 2023 (Saba) - Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kanaani renewed on Monday that Iran's condemnation of insulting the Holy Quran in Sweden, stressing the need for European governments to prevent the recurrence of insulting Islamic sanctities.
Tasnim International News Agency quoted Kanaani in his weekly press conference holding the Holy Qur’an as saying “Once again we condemn the insult to the Holy Quran in Sweden.
He added "Once again, we stress the governments in which this shameful insult was committed, to prevent the recurrence of such disgraceful acts, to deal strictly with the criminals, or to extradite these criminals to Islamic countries."
Regarding the visit of the Omani Foreign Minister and the Minister of State at the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs to Iran and the proposed initiatives, Kanaani said the visit of officials of the countries of the region is part of the framework of bilateral cooperation between Iran and these countries.
He affirmed Iran's commitment to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action and its welcome to the positive initiatives of the countries of the region, saying "This is an active diplomatic track.. We are neither optimistic nor pessimistic.. We were never oblivious to the diplomatic dynamics and the talks are moving forward."
Kanaani explained that Armenia's foreign minster visit came to take place within the framework of bilateral relations and in response to the visit of the Iranian Foreign Minister to Armenia.
He said "We have various issues to discuss with Armenia.. the cooperation between the two countries is important in the fields of energy, transit, economy and regional, adding that Iran's support for the peace process to resolve disputes is important."
Regarding the allegations related to the arrest of a fourth American by the Iranian authorities, Kanaani stressed that Iran is serious about exchanging prisoners based on its interest in its citizens.
He added "Unfortunately, the prolongation of the process resulted from the unwillingness of the US government... I cannot confirm nor comment on the allegations of the media."
Kanaani continued efforts are being made by some governments with good relations with both sides, adding that this depends on the political will of the American administration.
Regarding Iran's measures regarding insulting the Holy Qur'an, Kanaani said the abuse of the heavenly sanctities is unacceptable, shameful, and contrary to the freedoms of others and the Charter of the United Nations.
He added there is no country can violate the values of others by relying on its own laws, and this is a clear violation of the rights of other peoples.
Kanaani believed that thousands of citizens of the same country are followers of Islam, therefore, this government cannot insult the rights of some of its citizens and non-citizens, noting that other countries have shown that they are sensitive to insulting the holy books and their reaction.
It is worth to mention that Iran has announced that it will avoid accepting the new Swedish ambassador and will postpone the dispatch of its ambassador.
