Longest heat wave in Bangladesh closes schools, cuts off electricity
[Thu, 08 Jun 2023 09:53:30 +0300]

DHAKA June 08. 2023 (Saba) - Bangladesh has closed thousands of schools in the midst of the longest heat wave in half a century, with widespread power outages, exacerbating the suffering of the population.

“We have never seen such a prolonged heat wave since Bangladesh became independent in 1971,” Basilur Rashid, a senior official at the Bangladesh Ministry of Meteorology, told AFP. “The temperature in Dhaka has risen to around 40 degrees Celsius, adding the poor bear the brunt of the scorching sun."

Tens of thousands of primary schools have been closed by the government and electricity production has been drastically reduced, despite increased demand for air conditioners and fans.
